Mansfield restaurant owner jailed over fire safety breaches

A Mansfield Woodhouse businessman has been jailed and fined thousands after breaching fire safety hazards in his restuarant.

Gia Kamali, who is in charge at Mirch Massala, on Station Street, pleaded guilty to six charges relating to breaches of a Prohibition Notice, inadequate fire alarms, inadequate escape routes and inadequate maintenance of the accommodation where people sleep upstairs.

Nottingham Crown Court heard how Kamali accepted these failings had placed staff who used upstairs at risk of death or serious injury in the case of a fire.

The prosecution comes after a series of inspections by the fire service, dating back to 2013.

Kamali was sentenced to four months in prison and ordered to pay a £15,000 fine.
