Mansfield pupils suspended over their ‘exaggerated’ hair styles

Abby Huxley (14) and pal Courtney Redfern (15), were both ordered home for three days each for what the school called an ‘exaggerated’ hair cut.

Chiefs at Samworth Academy says it contravenes school rules, a claim which is rubbished by Abby’s furious mother, Paula Huxley.

Shes said: “We tried to flatten it down and make it more discreet, but the school was still not happy.

“Nobody who has seen it can understand what the problem is, and have said there are boys walking around with this type of hairstyle.

“There seems to be a trend going on and the school is obviously not happy about it, Abby seems to have been picked up first about it.”

Paula was not happy that the school had said she could either be suspended or sit in isolation as a punishment, especially as the two girls are now studying towards their GCSEs.

She admitted that Abby had been ‘under the spotlight’ before, but said she was not a troublemaker.

“We have always supported the school in whatever punishment they give to Abby, but we are not supporting them on this one,” added Paula.

Samworth Academy said it was unable to comment on individual cases, however, they referred to a policy on their website .

A spokesman added: “We communicate our expectations regularly and every effort is made to provide ample opportunity to resolve any issues that arise.

“If however we find that the situation is not remedied after meetings with the student and their family, we may, as a last resort, impose a more serious sanction which could mean a fixed term exclusion.”
