The Four Seasons said it was 'gearing up' to welcome the Post Office on Thursday, March 9.

Rebekah O’Neill, Four Seasons Shopping Centre manager, said: “We have a brilliant range of retailers and services at the centre and we are really pleased for the Post Office to become a part of our fantastic mix.

“We are thrilled that the Post Office’s vital services will still be available and convenient through this move. Plus, the same team who head up the Church Street branch will also be coming along to run the new addition, so we are looking forward to welcoming a few new colleagues.”

CLOSURE: Mansfield Post Office WILL be movingPOST OFFICE: See results of our online pollPost Office workers stage five days of strikes over ChristmasRoger Gale, Post Office Sales and Trade Marketing Director, said the move would help to ensure that the branch is commercially viable into the future.

“This will protect Post Office services on which customers in Mansfield depend,” he said.

But the move raised controversy as many customers are worries how the smaller branch in the Four Seasons Shopping Centre will manage queues, and there is concern on the impact of surrounding businesses near the closing unit on Church Street.

Our online poll showed 66 per cent of respondents did not support the relocation of the branch.

Mayor Kate Allsop previously criticised the plan.

She said: "The White Hart Street and Church Street area is a vital part of the town centre with many independent retailers who rely on footfall.

"The current location of the post office helps to maintain footfall in this area and supports those local retailers."

"The current post office building is a focal point for the White Hart Street area of town and we would not want to see such a large property become derelict."

While the move will mean Mansfield will keep a town centre branch, CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey has blamed sweeping closures nationally on the company's 'intransigence'.

He said: “Our members want the Post Office management to pause its closure and privatisation programme, hold off on its planned pensions changes, and commit to sitting down with us and with the other key stakeholders of this Great British institution and, together, construct a lasting vision. “We want to work together to build a positive future for the Post Office, its workforce and, of course, the people who we serve.
