Mansfield: Police operations helped to reduce drug use and violence

The ‘Too Drunk to Drink’ initiative saw extra officers deployed on the doors of Mansfield pubs and clubs, assisting door staff with drunken revellers and breath-testing anyone believed to have had too much to drink.

Several people deemed to be too intoxicated were refused entry and issued with Section 35 Direction to Leave notices, effectively ending their night and ordering them to leave the town centre.

Their descriptions were also circulated over the pub watch system to ensure the orders were adhered to, whilst door staff were also proactive in checking proof of identification of anyone believed to be under the age of 25 to prevent underage drinking in the town.

A drug amnesty was also held as part of a second operation, Operation Interweeving II, at the Illusions club in Mansfield on Friday 12th December, with several items surrendered at the door.

A further 250 people were drug tested by a machine provided by the Mansfield Partnership Against Crime, with 23 failing these tests.

Several searches carried out as a result and four arrests were made for possession of controlled drugs.

Five further arrests were made under the ‘Too Drunk to Drink’ operation, two for being drunk and disorderly, one for possession of cocaine, one for criminal damage and another for drink-driving.

Neighbourhood Policing Sergeant for Mansfield, Colin Kirkup, said: “Mansfield town centre has been very busy in the run up to Christmas, particularly last weekend where thankfully the majority of people enjoyed themselves responsibly.”

“We’ve been really pleased with the way local bars and clubs have embraced our work and with the support we’ve received from the local Doorwatch scheme, Mansfield District Council wardens and the street pastors who have supported those who have had too much to drink.”

“These initiatives will continue into the New Year as we continue to uphold Mansfield’s Purple Flag status and promote our town as a safe and welcoming place to enjoy a night out.”

As part of the operations, PCSOs will continue to patrol the town centre from the early evening, including the town’s bus station, train station and taxi ranks, to provide a visible presence and offer reassurance to anyone visiting Mansfield.
