MANSFIELD music campaign group Save Our Scene has lost its bid to re-open the Town Mill pub after the council’s planning committee approved plans for offices at the site.
Save Our Scene members had hoped to buy the well known Bridge Street music venue and run it on a not-for-profit basis for the benefit of local arts.
But councillors approved plans for a change of use from a public house to offices during last week’s meeting.
Works on the grade II listed building will include refurbishment of the existing building and a single storey extension to the rear.
Coun Christine Smith said the committee could not turn down a legitimate application because of a preferred use.
“The preferred use could be a really good project,” said Christine. “But if it does not happen you could end up with a rotting building.”
Maria Tucker, of Save Our Scene, said: “We are obviously very disappointed - we tried our best to get Mansfield District Council to come from a community side rather than the planning side.”
