Only three candidates will battle it out to become the new directly-elected mayor of Mansfield.

Martin Lee (Labour), Kate Allsop (Mansfield Independent Forum) and Phil Shields (Independent) were all confirmed as the candidates by Mansfield District Council this morning (Friday).

One of them will replace Tony Egginton, who is standing down as mayor after three terms. He became the town’s first ever elected mayor in 2002.

The Conservative Party nor the Liberal Democrats are fielding candidates. Both parties have fielded candidates in the previous three elections.

Mansfield is just one 16 towns or cities in Britain to have an elected mayor.

Voters go to the polls to elect a new mayor on 7th May, the same day as the General Election and local elections.
