Mike Robinson, director for economic growth, said: “We’re thrilled with the amount of people who came out to show their support for the new market and hope the public will continue to make Mansfield Market a prime shopping destination.

“We would like to encourage people to shop local, support our independent traders and help us to revitalise our town centre.”

As well as exciting events scheduled over the coming months, the council aims to breathe new life into the market to encourage shoppers back to the market town.

Mr Robinson said: “This is a great time to take a stall at the market, too – and for traders of new lines, they will get a year rent-free to help them build up their business.”

It was their first appearance of many in Mansfield Market Place, with new acts due to perform every month during 2016.

The entertainment included a craft workshop by Mansfield Museum, Gospel Choir, Steel Pan Band and the Maypole Goodtime Band - as well as a live performance by Sarah Adamson’s School of Dance in the new performance area at the front of the Old Town Hall.

They were joined by the Stilt Walking Chef, a comedy walkabout act who helped to give out freebies and informative leaflets about the market.
