A Mansfield man wants to thank the neighbours who saved his life when he had a heart attack at the wheel of his car.

Paul Manning, 71, had a heart attack while backing his car our of his garage on the morning of August 8. Mr Manning, who lives on Burlington Drive, said: “I was backing my car out of my garage on Ilion Street when the heart attack happened. “My car rolled across the road and mounted the kerb.

Mr Mannings partner, Val Hartley,75, saw that he was unresponsive and raised the alarm to brothers Paul and Daniel Parslow who lived nearby. “Once Val told Paul what happened and raced out to me, along with his brother Daniel.”Brian Steel, another neighbour, saw what happened and called for an ambulance, while Paul and Daniel pulled Mr Manning from his car. Another neighbour, Paula Sims, who is a nurse, ran out to help and began performing CPR chest compressions, while Paul performed a kiss of life. Although Mr Manning’s heart stopped for three minutes, ambulance staff arrived quickly and restarted his heart.Mr Manning said: “I went to King’s Mill Hospital and had two stents put in my heart. “I don’t remember much but I was in there for five days.”Mr Manning said he is incredibly grateful for his quick thinking neighbours and NHS staff that cared for him.He said: “I can’t thank them enough, I’m indebted to them all.”Mr Manning is now on the mend, after quitting a 58-year smoking habit, and losing weight.He said: “I was quite active, throughout my life I have taken part in football, squash and swimming. I started smoking at 14, so that didn’t help.”“I’ve always been a big eater but I’ve cut my carbohydrates right down.”

Mr Manning and Ms Hartley like to stay active, and enjoy walking in Sherwood Forest.

Mr Mannings daughter, Stephanie Manning, 33, said: “I don’t think nurses and NHS staff get enough recognition for the work that they do, and with world heart day on September 29, I really want to thank everyone that saved my dad’s life.”

Mr Manning's family would also like to thank to ward 23 at King's Mill hospital where Mr Manning was cared for before his discharge, as well as the cardiac suite, the ambulance crew on the day and the emergency department.

Mr Manning's daughters Stephanie Manning, Teresa Wiggins, 42, and Alicia Geraghty ,38 are all very happy their dad is on the mend, and on the road to recovery.

Mr Manning said: “It’s changed my outlook on life. I can’t thank everyone enough. without them, I wouldn’t be here today.”
