Mansfield man reported to police by his own father after he threatened to kill his ex

A Mansfield man who told his father he would stab his ex-partner and ‘shoot her if he had a gun’ had been making empty threats while drunk, a court heard.

Nigel Warren pleaded guilty At Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, to making a threatening telecommunication message.

Warren, 35 of Charlesworth Court was reported to the police after he made the threats during a phone call to his own father who had been concerned he might have been serious.

During the call he said; “I am going to stab her in the neck - and if I had a gun I would shoot her.”

When police went to his address, Warren had made similar remarks in the presence of officers and was arrested.

The unemployed father of two who had been under the influence of alcohol later told police he had no intention to kill his former partner or for her to think that he would. He did not have a gun or access to one or knew anyone who had one.

He said he had received ongoing text messages from her which had amounted to harassment and caused him grief, particularly one about preventing him from seeing his children, which had made him angry.

The counsel for the defence said Warren had a four-month relationship with his ex-partner and claimed he had been subject to abuse and harassment by her after it ended. The court heard she was on police bail for these alleged offences. Warren had an historic problem with alcohol misuse for 15 years and wanted to get his life back on track after the latest episode.

Magistrates recognised his early guilty plea and fined him £70, with costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £20.
