Jonathan David Edwards, 27, of Third Avenue, Forest Town, admitted producing the Class B drug at his home address when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court.

Ruth Snoddin, prosecuting, said police called at his home after reports about the smell on June 12 and discovered three plants under one light.

Michael Little, mitigating, said Edwards had a £10 a day habit and had been smoking cannabis since he was 13 to ‘take the edge off’ a difficult family background.

He said Edwards became ill after smoking chemically-treated cannabis and so started to grow his own, but he had no intention of selling the crop.

The court heard he received a 12 month community order in May 2015 for the same offence.

Magistrates gave him a 12 month community order with 15 days of one-to-one rehabilitation to address his drug use and 80 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay £85 costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
