Mansfield man fined more than £2,000 after he threw building materials from his van

A Mansfield man has been fined more than £2,000 after he dumped building materials at the side of a road.

Christopher Moles, 26, of Sadler Street, Mansfield, admitted depositing bags of waste, contrary to section 33 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

Building materials, including bags of tiles, a sink with taps and a toilet - the waste from a bathroom refurbishment - were found on Green Lane in Pleasley on November 4, which had been fly tipped from the back of his van.

A passing motorist witnessed the items being thrown from the van, noted the vehicle registration and reported the matter to council officers who then investigated the offence.

After hearing the details of the case magistrates imposed a fine of £1230, victim surcharge of £123, compensation of £173.24 and costs of £497, making a total of £2023.24.

Cllr Bill Drewett, Portfolio Holder for Safer Communities said:“Fly tipping continues to be a major problem. It creates a health hazard and blights the landscape. We will not tolerate the actions of people who dump their waste and damage the environment, which then costs thousands of pounds of tax payers’ money to clear up. I am sure that residents across the district would find this behaviour very upsetting and totally unacceptable.

“If people fly tip waste, they need to realise that they will be caught and prosecuted, and could end up with a hefty fine via the courts and a criminal record.”
