Plans to resurrect the Mansfield Half Marathon are progressing with organisers hoping it will be held as early as September.

The showcase event had been run for more than 30 years, and attracted thousands of competitors, before it was cancelled in 2012 because of red tape.

Last year Chad revealed how business networking group, Mansfield 2020, was in talks with former organiser, Steve Shatwell, about bringing back, with hopes it could boost trade and tourism.

Following talkswith finacnial backers, confidence is high that it can make a triumphant return this year.

Operations manager at Mansfield 2020, Caroline Cox, said: “Steve has worked very hard in the background to liaise with his team of experts that will support the actual organisation of this event.

“Mansfield 2020 is in talks with bodies to secure the funding required.

“This funding will ensure the event is self-substantial from 2014 and beyond. Therefore, securing this showcasing community event for the long-term.

“From what started off as a piece of research we conducted to find out what our business community actually wanted - it has turned out to be an overwhelming demand from all of Mansfield and beyond.”

The race had been successfully organised by the voluntary Road Race Committee until 2012 when the rising costs of health and safety regulations brought it to a halt.

The cost of closing the roads had risen and organisers said it had simply become unsustainable.

They said to cover the soaring costs, those wanting to take part in the 13-mile race would have faced a massive hike in entry fees.
