Mansfield firefighters rescue trapped toddler and cat

Mansfield firefighters undertook not just one, but two unusual rescues in one morning, including a toddler trapped in a house and a cat stuck on a roof.

They were called out at around 10.30am on May 16 to reports that a two year-old boy had managed to lock his mum out of their home on Mansfield Woodhouse’s Bryony Way.

The security conscious toddler had shut a door behind his mother just as she had nipped outside and then she was unable to get back in as the door was secured with a Yale lock.

So firefighters gained entry through a first-floor window with a ladder and released the youngster from inside.

Firefighter Les Hallam said: “His mum was very worried but we soon put her fears at ease.

“The little boy was also quite distressed but very happy after five minutes sat in the fire engine.”

But no sooner had the crew left this job than they were dispatched to another dramatic rescue on Berry Hill’s Southridge Drive.

The owners of a rather distressed black and white cat named Louis had called to say he had been stuck on their roof for 48 hours.

Fire Officer Hallam said: “I put the ladder up and when I got to the roof I must admit that even I was surprised by how the cat came to me.

“An RSPCA officer who was there said it was the first time she had known a cat not to be scared by our uniform.

“The owners were well pleased to have him back and the cat was himself because he was wet-through with rain and I think he was quite hungry.”
