A fire service spokesman said: “The owners of the house were actually out when the fire took hold but they were notified by a friend or relative that their house was on fire.

“When we arrived they were all out of the property but their two dogs, who were both locked in the room where the fire took hold, were unfortunately killed.”

Crews used six breathing apparatus and two hosereel jets to tackle the blaze.

The residents, which included a three-year-old and an 11-year-old, were checked out by paramedics but did not need hospital treatment.

It is not yet known what caused the fire.
