Mansfield District Council is joining a regional landlord accreditation scheme run by the DASH (Decent and Safe Homes) project.
The East Midlands Landlord Accreditation Scheme (EMLAS) is designed to protect tenants from rogue landlords in the private rented sector and reward good landlords.
Landlords who sign up for the scheme are awarded a quality mark for demonstrating their skills in tenant and property management.
They will also benefit from various discounts on a range of services, including insurance, kitchen and bedroom fittings and letting agents.
Accreditation is awarded to the landlord rather than the property and each landlord is required to attend a professional development course, which covers areas such as legal standards for property management, setting up and ending a tenancy, health and safety and the legal rights of both landlords and tenants.
On applying for registration to the scheme, DASH Accreditation Services inspect 10 per cent of a landlord’s portfolio to ensure that standards are being met.
Portfolio Holder for Housing Strategy and Regeneration, Councillor Derek Evans said: “The charity Shelter has highlighted the growing problem of rogue landlords in Britain in the private rented sector. With the number of people living in the private rented sector growing and set to increase, Mansfield District Council believes that there should be a system in place in the District for tenants to check whether they are renting from a good landlord.
“The scheme will enable tenants to make an informed choice when renting a property and will help them to avoid the pitfalls of renting from a rogue landlord.
“One of the Council’s priorities is to ensure there is an adequate supply of good quality, well managed housing, which is accessible and affordable to those who need it. The implementation of the DASH accreditation scheme will help to ensure that properties are brought up to a good standard and that the accredited landlords are properly equipped to manage their portfolio well.”
