Mansfield Christmas pictures from the past

As December dazzles in the sparkle of Christmas lights and decorations, here are some images of festive celebrations from the past across Nottinghamshire.

This image shows Christmas decorations at Westgate in Mansfield in 1994, and was taken by D Bradbury. The image also shows the first floor of the then Mansfield Library.

Images are available from Picture the Past - a collaboration of historic images managed jointly between Nottinghamshire County Council, Derby City Council, Nottingham City Council and Derbyshire County Council.

Councillor John Knight, committee chairman for culture at Nottinghamshire County Council said: “These images give an interesting insight into Christmas across the county in the past, and the Picture the Past website is a great resource which has many different images from yesteryear and more recent times, that can teach us so much about our heritage and rekindle old memories.”

The Picture the Past website has more than 100,000 pictures in its unique archive and aims to make historic images from library, archives and museum collections across the whole of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire available to the public via a free-to-use website.

Some of those images are also reproduced on Nottinghamshire County Council’s Twitter feed as part of its #ThrowbackThursday initiative each week.
