Mansfield: Building a clearer picture of crime hot spots

Neil Williams of Nottinghamshire Police, safer neighbourhood inspector for Mansfield south, was joined by police and crime commissioner Paddy Tipping on a walk around the town.

Samantha Yates, licensing manager for Mansfield District Council and chairman of the Town Centre Management Plus group, coun Mick Barton, portfolio holder for public protection and Yvette Armstrong, Nottinghamshire County Council’s community safety officer, were also part of the delegation.

The walk took in the ‘Partnership Plus’ areas of Portland, Ladybrook and Carr Bank - wards that have been identified as key to tackling in the bid to cut crime - as well as the town centre.

The get-together was part of a review of police strategy at ‘grass roots level’ and is seen as valuable to better understanding the biggest problems.

“There are a number of priority areas across the county and these Mansfield wards and the town centre are included in that number,” said Mr Tipping.

“Although crime rates have been dropping over the years, it’s fair to say that this year has been quite difficult.

“I speak to a lot of out ‘top cops’ but you can’t beat getting out on the street seeing these areas with your own eyes and discussing what can be done better.

“To tackle crime we have to have a united approach and look at how we can engage local people.”

Insp Williams added: The biggest issue for the town is violent crime and a lot of that stems from the night time economy.

“Theft is also an increasing problem - directly from people, of bikes and of cars - and we’re aware that these are areas to maintain a strong focus.”

Coun Barton feels that the extra scrutiny in the ‘Partnership Plus’ areas continues to be vital to keeping crime figures in check.

“By getting all the relevant parties involved, we are able to share best practice and get across any concerns.

“You can read as many stats and reports as you like, but it has real meaning when you get out about the town.

“I think ‘Partnership Plus’ is a scheme that’s working, and I’d like to thank Mansfield Partnership Against Crime (MPAC) for their work in implementing our plans.”
