Mansfield and Ashfield folk urged to save energy

Mansfield District Council is encouraging residents and businesses across the District to join millions around the world in switching off their non-essential lights and appliances for Earth Hour.

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) initiative takes place for an hour from 8.30pm on Saturday 29 March to raise awareness of climate change.

Last year over 7,000 towns and cities across 154 countries took part along with the world’s most iconic landmarks, including the Las Vegas Strip, the Kremlin, the Houses of Parliament and New York’s Times Square.

The Council is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and already switches off non-essential lighting and appliances in a number of its buildings all year round when they are not in use.

It also has a Carbon Management Plan, which sets out how the Council will reduce its emissions and help residents and businesses across the District to do the same.

A number of energy saving projects included in the plan have already been completed, including installing cavity wall insulation, energy efficient lighting and boilers at a number of Council properties.

The Council’s commitment and drive to reduce the impact of climate change was previously recognised by the Local Government Chronicle when it was awarded the Low Carbon Council of the Year Award.

Coun Phillip Shields, portfolio holder for the environment, said: “Earth Hour is a simple way for people to show their support for helping to reduce climate change.

“We should all flick off the switches on our tv, laptop, lights and games consoles and think about how we can do more in the future to protect our wonderful planet for generations to come.”
