Mansfield addict runs into trouble after stealing 18 boxes of Imodium

A Mansfield drug addict has been given a community order after admitting stealing £134 worth of anti-diarrheal drug Imodium.

Town magistrates were told how Craig Maltby (29), of Hatton Court, was confronted by staff at B&M Bargains after being seen stealing two Waggon Wheels.

He was found in possession of 18 boxes of Imodium, which he had stolen from Home Bargains.

Daniel Pietryka, prosecuting, said: “He made full admissions, saying he had drug problems at the time.”

Michael Little, defending, said: “Mr Maltby had extensive drug problems but his record stopped in November 2010.

“There had been no offences since then and the reason for that is he got a methadone script and managed to sort his problem out, but sadly this year there was a relapse.”

Maltby admitted committing the offences while subject of a community order for two other thefts in June.

But Mr Little said Maltby had made full admissions and accepted he had committed the thefts to fund his drug addiction.

A probation officer said: “Mr Maltby has previous involvement with probation but has complied with the latest order.

“I have concerns about his motivation and chaotic lifestyle at present. Drugs are the most significant issue in this case.”

Maltby was given a six-month supervision order and made to pay compensation of £319 to the Co-operative for the June thefts.

A magistrate said: “You have gone a long way and shown you are capable of being drug-free for a long time.

“But you have others to think about as well as yourself.”
