A man who hit his partner over the head with bed railing before punching her has avoided a custodial sentence.

Shane Taylor (27), of Heather Way, Mansfield, had been drinking when an argument broke out at home.

The court had heard how he turned violent after they had been to a party in November. He pulled the railing from a child’s bed and struck her with it.

Taylor denied the charge of assault, but was convicted after a trial.

Passing sentence, Deputy District Judge PD King said: “You can count yourself very lucky, beating people with pipes generally will result in going to prison.”

He was given a four-month suspended sentence,100 hours of community service and told to pay £480 in costs.
