Man who built up nationally famous Ashfield haulage firm from scratch dies aged 80

Much-respected Ashfield businessman Barry Taylor who built up a national haulage business from scratch has died aged 80.

Family and friends have paid tribute to Mr Taylor, founder of what became Taylors Transport Group, who passed away at King’s Mill Hospital on October 5 following a illness.

Barry Taylor established B Taylor and Sons Transport Limited, his family owned road haulage and transport business in 1974 which was taken over by his son Alan Taylor upon his retirement.

Alan Taylor said: “My dad was a nice man, a gentleman who treated everybody fairly and had no enemies.

“That was one reason why he was so successful - he wasn’t a greedy man and he worked hard to build up his business.

“He was a local guy who lived on the Carsick estate and started up with just one van.

Mr Taylor bought other sites in Huthwaite and at the Millennium Business park and Hamilton Road as his business expanded.

The firm is now a national operation with more than 300 lorries and tankers.

Alan Taylor added: “It has been a very sad time for all the family and we will miss him terribly.

“He was not only my dad, he worked with me for 39 years - although I remember he did sack me a couple of times””

Mr Taylor was a keen golfer and a Rotarian and a member of both Sutton and Kirkby Rotary clubs.

The company is well known for contributing thousands of pounds to good causes, including a minibus at Bailey House Care home in Mansfield and buggies for transporting patients at King’s Mill Hospital.

Mr Taylor, whose wife Sheila died last year aged 79, is survived by his four children and eight grandchildren. and two great grandchildren.

His funeral will be held at Mansfield Crematorium on October 20, followed by a wake at the Rushley in Mansfield.
