Sheilds of Lord street used racist language to insult a security guard who escorted him off the premises and the pair had scuffled.

Sheilds then hailed a taxi and was driven to Lord Street.

Magistrates heard as Sheilds got out of the taxi, he flicked the eyes of the taxi driver and slapped his head, knocking his glasses off.

When he was arrested, he told police he had been out drinking with his brother from 3pm until the early hours and had drunk 15 pints of lager.

He had then met up with another person but couldn’t recall what had happened apart from ‘messing about ‘ in Tesco.

The court heard the taxi drivers’ £150 glasses had been damaged in the assault.

Sheild’s defence solicitor said he had been every remorseful when he had been shown cctv evidence and had since made contact with both the store security officer and the taxi driver and apologised for what he had done.

He was given a 12-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months and ordered to pay compensation of £100 to each complainant.

Sheild was ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a criminal court charge of £180.
