Man launches a vicious drunken attack on a man protecting a teenager from his threats

James Alistair Wilson 39, of Foxglove Grove, appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday where he pleaded guilty to two counts of common assault.

The court heard that a teenager who cannot be named for legal reasons was playing football at the park on October 7 when he was approached by two other youngsters who seemed scared.

They asked him to help them because a man had accused them of harassing him. The youngsters pointed out Wilson and the teenager asked him if he had been ‘having a go’ at the children.

Wilson had become angry and told him it was none of his business.

Wilson came towards him with his arms out and his fist followed through, pushing the youth on the chest making him stumble backwards.

The shocked teenager walked away but was followed by Wilson who was using abusive language.

Another man who had been out with his six-year old son saw Wilson following the teenager and stood between them.

Wilson had squared up to him, shouting he was going to kill him.

Wilson punched the complainant in the face, bit him on the chin, bit his forearm twice and clawed at his face, trying to force a finger in his eye and forced him to the floor.

Another man arrived at the scene as Wilson was punching the complainant on the head and restrained him before his arrest. Wilson, who suffered from depression and had problems with alcohol, told police he had drunk a bottle of vodka along with a friend on the day of the incident.

He was very remorseful for what he had done and could not remember much about it. He said he had confronted youngsters playing football near his car.

Magistrates sentenced him to a total of 20 days imprisonment suspended for 18 months and he was told to go on an alcohol treatment program for six months with a 10 day rehab requirement.

Wilson was ordered to pay compensation of £50 to the teenager and £250 to the man he attacked.
