Marjorie Kirkham –Smith, prosecuting, told the court that onlookers managed to take his keys from him before there was an accident.

District Judge Jonathan Taaffe said: “You were driving the wrong way up a major highway with vehicles coming towards you.

“It is only by the grace of God that you didn’t kill yourself, or God forbid, other people.

“It beggars belief that you found yourself in this situation. The fact is you have been extremely fortunate.”

He was disqualified for 22 months and told to pay court costs and a victim surcharge.
