The court heard on July 15 he had been drinking during the day and had gone out with his brother late at night.

When they returned he had gone into his mother and father’s bedroom and threatened to punch his father’s head in.

His father reported the incident to the police.

Pickering also admitted stealing two boxes of Foster’s lager worth £24 from a motor vehicle at Desco, Clumber Street Warsop, on June 19.

Pickering had been subject to a suspended sentence imposed in June this year for an assault conviction.

His defence solicitor said Pickering had been heavily under the influence of alcohol when the offence had occurred.

For the past three years he had been drinking to excess - between four and 20 cans of lager a day and was making efforts to control it.

Three years ago a relationship had ended and his children had been taken away from him.

He was pinning his hopes on taking part in a detox unit.

Sentencing Pickering to a total of 16 weeks imprisonment, District Judge Jonathan Taaffe said: “Drink has ruined your life and the lives of your mother and father.

“If you need more motivation it is to think about your mother.”
