Make your views count - have a say on proposals

Campaigners are recognising a part-victory to protect the Hucknall name in the political boundary shake-up.

The Keep Hucknall Hucknall campaign was set up to fight plans to remove the Hucknall name from proposed new council wards across the town.

It was part of a review to ensure that each councillor represents a similar number of voters so that the value of the vote, in local elections, is the same regardless of where you live in Ashfield.

The Commission also aims to draw local ward boundaries that reflect the interests and identities of communities across the district.

But in a bid to fight against the change of names, led by Nottinghamshire County Councillor John Wilkinson, a campaign was set up through discussions with community groups, a dedicated website, petitions , both written and online, for the voice of the people to be heard.

“Over 1,240 Hucknall people contributed to this challenge with the result that the Commission has produced new recommendations based on our work,” said Coun Wilkinson. “The new plan keeps the name of Hucknall, provides for familiar and recognised ward boundaries to be retained and, by giving Hucknall an extra councillor, strengthens Hucknall’s voice.”

The fight is not completely won though as the Boundary Commission has set up another phase of consultation which will run until 26th August.

Max Caller CBE, chairman of the Boundary Commission said: “We listened carefully to all the views put to us earlier this year. We are now asking people to have their say on the revised proposals.”
