Major delays after M1 smash

Commuters travelling along both carriageways of the M1 near Mansfield are facing major disruption following a road traffic collision earlier today (Friday, 17th January).

The southbound carriageway is closed following a collision between two lorries and a car which occurred at around 8.15am and police say they expect it to remain closed until at least 3pm.

A lorry driver has received leg injuries which are not thought to be serious.

Wreckage from the vehicles and fuel has spilled across the carriageway and will need to be cleared before the road can be reopened, police said.

Some motorists have now been trapped north of the accident site on the southbound carriageway for more than three hours and police are in the process of diverting stranded vehicles back up the northbound carriageway.

This is, however, causing an additional build-up of congestion for vehicles travelling north as police attempt to turn stranded cars around.

Cars travelling southbound are being diverted off the M1 at Junction 29 and police are warning drivers to avoid the area.
