M1 closed after Kirkby blaze / Residents in Kirkby, Selston, Annesley Woodhouse and Kirkby Woodhouse told to keep windows shut

A TANKER fire at Kirkby has led to police closing the M1 on Friday evening and residents being warned to stay in their homes.

The M1 was shut in both directions between junctions 27 and 28 at around 5.40pm as a precaution against smoke drifting over the motorway.

Residents in Annesley Woodhouse, Kirkby Woodhouse, Kirkby and Selston are being advised to keep windows and doors closed and remain inside their homes.

The fire at an industrial estate on Park Lane in Kirkby has led to the evacuation of the immediate area and police say that a cordon is in place.

It is being reported that the blaze, currently being tackled by firefighters, involves calcium oxide, also known as quicklime, and that water can not be used to fight the fire as the substance reacts with water and foam.
