Almost £50,000 has been secured to carry out an archaeology project on Burgage Manor in Southwell.

Courtesy of the Heritage Lottery Fund, the two-year project will seek to unearth relics from the past, particularly Burgage Green and the site of a lost mediaeval chapel.

It includes detailed surveying, trench and other excavation work as well as finds processing all under professional guidance.

Commenting on the award, chairman of Southwell Community Archaeology Group, John Lock said: “An enormous amount of effort has gone into developing this project which brings together different parts of our community to learn new skills and have a ‘hands on’ understanding of a part of our heritage.”
