Lorry driver fined for breaching weight restrictions on roads in Papplewick, Linby and Blidworth

A lorry driver has received a £240 fine with £100 costs for breaching two heavy goods vehicle (HGV) weight restrictions in Papplewick, Linby and Blidworth at Mansfield Magistrates Court.

Kirk Denton of Portland Avenue, Aston, Sheffield, pleaded guilty to two charges of breaching HGV environmental weight restrictions in Blidworth and on Forest Lane, Linby Lane and Wighay Road in Papplewick and Linby without legitimate reason last August.

He was driving a 26 tonne lorry when there is a 7.5 tonne limit on the Papplewick and Linby roads and 18 tonne limit in Blidworth.

Nottinghamshire County Council brought the case to court and has been working with Papplewick and Linby Parish Councils on a ‘community lorry watch’ scheme in the area.

This has seen local residents take to their streets to record details of vehicles travelling through their village which they believe to be over the legal weight limit.

Speaking after the case, Coun Glynn Gilfoyle, chairman of the County Council’s Community Safety Committee, said: “This substantial fine sends a clear message out to other HGV drivers who are tempted to flout the regulations and use these roads as a short cut.

“The restrictions are in place for a reason as these roads are not designed for such heavy vehicles which can cause significant damage and noise pollution for the local community and are a potential road safety risk to pedestrians and other road users.”
