Lorry driver cleared of Bilsthorpe rape

A lorry driver accused of holding a woman prisoner and raping her in his cab near Bilsthorpe has been cleared on all counts.

A jury at Nottingham Crown Court found 24-year-old Paul Mongan, of Ashbourne, County Meath, Ireland, not guilty of all seven charges he faced, including false imprisonment, three counts of rape and three other sexual allegations.

The court was told he met a woman in a Bilsthorpe pub and invited her back to his lorry in a lay-by near the Limes cafe on the A614 in May last year.

He told the police they had alcohol and sex, but he denied holding her there against her will or raping her.

Police seized his lorry at the port of Holyhead, in North Wales, and he was taken to Newark police station. A judge later bailed him on a £10,000 surety to an address in England.
