Look around Becky's new £5m baths

RESIDENTS are being given chance to view the new-look Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre when it opens its doors for the first time after a £5m transformation.

A special weekend will be held on 2nd-3rd January at the pool where the double Olympic gold medallist learned to swim and has now been extended from four lanes to six.

The Mansfield facility, which was formerly Sherwood Baths, includes a new 44-station gym, new changing area, an activity room and a ground source heat pump and biomass boiler to reduce its carbon footprint.

Coun Eddie Smith, portfolio for the environment, said: "The new Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre really does push all the right buttons — the pool has been extended, the gym facilities are second to none, there is a state-of-the-art endless training pool and the dcor is absolutely stunning.

"It is also the first facility in our area to go green, with the introduction of a ground source heat pump and biomass boiler which will save more than 520 tonnes of CO2 per year."

At the free opening weekend, the centre will be open from 8am-5pm on Saturday and 9am-5pm on Sunday for people to view the facilities and try out the gym equipment and weights.

And on Saturday, the pool will be open to the public from 8am-10am, with swimming instructors offering consultations to people on learning to swim from 8am-4pm.

On Sunday, the pool will be open for public swimming from 9am-11am, with swimming clubs testing the facility after then.

The centre will open fully to the public on 4th January, with an official opening event to follow in February.
