Ashby Espin, 25, of Gladstone Street, Worksop, pleaded guilty to stealing £48 of detergent from Asda on October 17 last year, and was sentenced to a 12 month community order with 60 hours of unpaid work.

Mansfield magistrates heard he only carried out two of the 60 hours because he landed a new job.

Espin applied to change the unpaid work requirement, but wound up being arrested and spending 48 hours in custody after failing to attend three court dates when the application was to be heard.

David Verity, mitigating, told the court Espin claimed he did not receive any letters telling him of the court dates.

Magistrates revoked the original order and gave him a six month conditional discharge.
