Local schools nominated in reading awards

Five Nottinghamshire schools are hoping to pick up one of the awards up for grabs at this year’s annual Reading Recovery Awards.

The awards, organised by the European Centre for Reading Recovery and held at the Instituate of Education in London, celebrate and honour teachers, pupils and governors who have made an outstanding contribution to children’s literacy through reading recovery.

Two local teachers are nominated in the category Reading Recovery Teacher of the Year - Hannah Madely from Netherfield Primary School and Peter Lovell from Leamington Primary School in Sutton.

Northfield Nursery and Primary School in Mansfield Woodhouse has been nominated in the effective working with parents,carers, and guardians to support literacy in the school category.

Abbey Hill Primary School in Kirkby in Ashfield has been nominated in the growth of professional learning about early literacy throughout the school category.

And a writing and picture competition for past and present reading recovery children has two Nottinghamshire finalists from Keyworth Primary and Nursery School.

In the five to six age range, Tilly Howard-Musgrove and, in the seven and over age range, Jake Harlow hope to pick up the top prize of a £50 WHSmith voucher for themselves and a trophy, as well as a £50 WHSmith voucher for their school.

Nottinghamshire County Council’s group manager for Support to School Services Marion Clay, said: “We are very proud to have so many schools, teachers and pupils shortlisted and we wish them every success at the awards on Friday.

“Nottinghamshire County Council is a big supporter of the Every Child a Reader initiative and we have also trained some 40 teachers in the last 2 years to roll out the reading recovery programme.”
