Linford Christie to be at Sutton’s Summer Solstice

Former Olympic gold medal winning sprinter Linford Christie will be back in Ashfield this weekend at a special street athletics event being held in Sutton.

The athlete’s appearance is part of the town’s Summer Solstice celebration which runs on Friday and Saturday in Sutton Town Centre.

He will present the Street Athletics event on Saturday afternoon, which invites youngsters to race against each other over a 60m distance.

But this is just one of a packed programme of activities that are taking place during the two-day summer attraction.

It runs both days from 9am until 4pm in the Portland Square area and will feature stalls, face painting, games, music and food and drink.

On Friday, from 10.30am until 11am, Sutton Community Academy’s Adult Education Students (Skills for Independent Living Group)will be singing live.

Year seven students will then perform ‘A Good Day to Mill Around’ at 2pm, starting in the Idlewells Centre’s cafe.

This play will move locations, finishing at Lindley’s Mill on Prospect Place.

On Saturday, the Ashfield District Council Workplace Choir will be performing at 10am and from 11am until noon you can ‘Meet a Minion’ - the popular characters from the film Despicable Me.

The Summer Solstice has been organised by the Sutton Town Centre Group and Active Ashfield.
