The chain submitted plans to the city council last week to build on the site of the former New Crown Motors, at the junction of Main Street and Jennison Street.

The new shop, which would lead to a multi-million pound investment in the area if planning approval is granted, will be built opposite the three-storey Tesco Extra on the same road, on a derelict 5,503 sq metre site.

The 1,424 sq metre glass-panelled supermarket would include a bakery, baby-changing facilities and parking for cars and bicycles, as well as bringing new jobs, according to Lidl.

Lidl UK’s regional head of property, Nick Harvey, said: “We have received an incredible amount of support from the local community and are delighted to announce that we have submitted a planning application with Nottingham City Council. If granted, this would mark a multi-million pound investment in the area, and the creation of new jobs when the store opens.

“We would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their support and feedback so far and look forward to receiving the decision in due course.”

Planning permission for the site, which contains a row of houses with one that is still inhabited, has been an ongoing issue for many years.

Nottingham city councillor Ginny Klein welcomed the news: “That site has been derelict for years and it’s been a big eyesore. I think it is great that we have an option - there’s no reason why people should shop at Tesco and Lidl!”

Tesco was contacted but declined to comment.
