Lewis lands himself apprenticeship at construction firm

A Mansfield teenager has landed an apprenticeship with leading housebuilder Westleigh at its Meadow Lane development in Alfreton.

Lewis Payne, 15, who is studying level two joinery at Vision West Nottinghamshire College in Mansfield, will complete his apprenticeship under the guidance of Westleigh’s team of construction experts.

He is one of 17 apprentices across the Midlands taken on by the firm this academic year.

The advanced apprentice programme, which takes approximately three years to complete, will see Lewis split his time between learning at college and working at Westleigh’s Meadow Lane development.

The latest intake of apprentices was invited to an induction day event to learn more about the work that the company does and the role that they will play in helping to build on its already excellent reputation within the construction industry.

Lewis said: “I spoke to my dad, who works in joinery, about the scheme and he said that it was a great opportunity, so he encouraged me to apply.

“The fact that my dad is a joiner definitely influenced my decision to pursue it as a career. I’m very aware that it’s a challenging job, but I find it to be really enjoyable and rewarding.

“The main thing that I’ve gained from the induction day is the importance of health and safety. It’s the number one priority on site and the talk that we were given was really useful and informative.”

A range of apprenticeship schemes are available with Westleigh, specialising in bricklaying, carpentry/joinery and groundwork trades.

Lewis added: “I’m looking forward to absolutely everything about my apprenticeship with Westleigh and I can’t wait to learn more out on site.”

Ian Jones, managing director of Westleigh Homes, said: “We’re delighted to welcome Lewis to our talented and ever-expanding joinery team.

“Helping our staff to realise their full potential is right at the heart of who we are as a company and we work very hard to support our apprentices right from the start.

“We hope that Lewis enjoys learning his chosen trade and wish him every success for the future.”

Applications are now being taken for the next intake of apprenticeships. To apply or for more information visit www.westleigh.co.uk and complete the application form.

Westleigh requires its applicants to have GCSEs in Maths and English at grade A to C, and a passion and commitment for working in construction. The deadline for applications is Sunday March 11, 2018.
