LETTER: Why can't sweetcorn help the needy?

At Meden Vale old mine working site, there is a digestion plant that makes methane gas, maybe to run electrical generators which is a good idea.

The after waste can be used for the garden. My big concern is why are farmers growing sweetcorn in our local fields from all over north Nottinghamshire, then harvesting in September/November, then sending it by tractor trailers all over Notts in convoy to this plant. There must be about 4,000 tonnes, why? I think it’s just a waste. Why don’t the government pay the farmers for the sweetcorn and send it to the third world countries for starving people, or is it the wrong type of sweetcorn?
