LETTER: I hope Mansfield lottery is a success

I was very interested to read in this newspaper about the new Mansfield Lottery. I hope it is a success. If my memory serves me right didn't we have a similar money raising venture some 30-odd years ago that had to be shut down?

If I am correct then the people behind this new lottery must learn from previous errors.

After all they will be up against other rivals such as Lotto, Euro, Health, and Postcode Lotteries, all of whom have much larger cash prizes.

I know that there have been big winners from Mansfield on these other lotteries.

So there is much competition facing this new lottery in getting us to part with our hard-earned money, particularly as our top prize will “only” be £20,000, which is not a life changing sum is it? I am not sure that people from outside Mansfield will want to buy our lottery tickets as any profits will -as I understand it- be solely for the benefit of our town. I would suggest that Mayor Allsop will need to raise the profile of this venture to grab people’s interest.

The local and regional media will have an important role to play in achieving this as well.

A suggestion from me is that the lottery draws are made in public by local celebrities.

In my humble opinion it would help everyone if organisations are invited to seek funding from our lottery, the details of these applications being made public, and the final decisions as to which ones are given grants are made by a small committee representing the good people of Mansfield.

I do think that local people will be more likely to buy tickets from this new lottery if they can see how good causes will benefit. I will certainly be buying Mansfield Lottery tickets. I just hope others will follow my example provided, of course, that they can afford it.
