LETTER: Do more to look after the poor and needy

I fully endorse the comments made in a recent letter from David Stafford when he said that people should make sure that they use their votes in upcoming elections, and that the holding of public meetings with candidates would help electors in making up their minds as to who to support.

Read Mr Stafford’s letter here.

However, I cannot see this happening here in Mansfield.

We don’t have a history of political debate do we?

The last time I recall a similar event happening was when Arthur Scargill came to town in a failed attempt to get Notts miners to join in the coal strike, and that was more than 30 years ago.

I do agree with Mr Stafford that many voters will, rightly or wrongly, be more concerned with local matters, even more so than Brexit.

We will be looking to our county councillors to improve our schools and, to look after the elderly and disabled by improving social care.

Similarly I don’t think it is asking too much that our local MPs seek to sort any problems still existing at King’s Mill Hospital, to improve and make fairer the benefits paid to children, the elderly and disabled.

Could all our political representatives work together to eradicate the need for food banks by the end of the next parliament?

Wouldn’t that be something to be proud of?

Giving people access to well paid jobs should be another goal worth aiming for.

There are too many Mansfielders who are struggling to make ends meet who are not, to quote Mrs May, even “just about managing”, and that includes those who are working.

I hope our political leaders, whatever party they belong to, will take inspiration from local hero Robin Hood who went to great lengths look after the poor and needy.
