LETTER: Chesterfield won't miss Chexiteer

Yes, things have changed not just in Chesterfield but everywhere and I too miss the Chesterfield department store. However some of our larger towns and cities have seen far greater decline and a plethora of cash converter and quick loan shops now dominate their high streets. 
I live a few miles south of the town and love to shop in Chesterfield, it still has a vibrant and unique market and many specialist stores in the town centre.

Many of my friends and relatives when visiting from the south coast always make a point of visiting the town on market days and comment how lucky I am to have access to such a gem. The cafes are good and it is lovely to sit outside and soak up the atmosphere with a cup of coffee whilst shopping.

As someone who also remembers shopping in the 50s and 60s, life was different but not necessarily better. 
I prefer to look forward and enjoy what we have. We cannot go back and those who want to are probably blotting out the grim reality of what life was really like, clothes and shoes were very expensive and people had far less, food too was expensive and many things were not always available.

Who wants to go back to the bad old days with outside loos, Izal toilet paper and 
few homes with central heating?

We had nasty characters then as now but then we probably always will if history is correct.

I like Chesterfield just fine (and also want it to stay as unique Chesterfield and not part of Sheffield).

Mr or Ms Chexiteer, nobody is missing you.
