The fire service said it received about 40 calls regarding the incident from concerned members of the public.

Firefighters managed to prevent the flames from spreading and left them to burn overnight. The fire is now out.

The fire service spokesman said: “Firefighters, Peak Park rangers and the landowners reinspected the scene this morning and no further action is needed.”

They added: “We would like to remind people of the dangers of being on moorland at night. Fire, however started, can spread quickly creating a dangerous and frightening situation.”

It is not clear how the fire started.
