The Shadow Chancellor will speak in support of Labour’s parliamentary candidate Sonya Ward, who is also leader of the Labour group on Mansfield council.

Mr McDonnell said: “Sonya knows the difference a Jeremy Corbyn led Labour government will make for Mansfield, for all workers, and for the whole country.

“Mansfield has been let down badly by the Tory government, which has inflicted more than eight years of austerity on this community and presided over a deeply unfair tax system that leaves most people worse off at the expense of the super-rich.

“Labour will increase income tax on the top fice per cent, the people who can afford it, who can pay a little bit more.

"Labour will also tackle tax evasion and avoidance, and make sure we reverse some of the giveaways to the corporations.

“Only Labour will tax the rich and giant corporations to end austerity, fund our public services properly, and build an economy that works for the many, not the few.”

The Shadow Chancellor has already visited two other Tory-held marginal seats, Hastings in Sussex, Broxtowe in Nottinghamshire and Pudsey, West Yorkshire, as part of his nationwide tour aimed at exposing the impact of Tory austerity measures on our communities.

The 2018 programme for the tour will included visits to Scotland and Lancashire next month.
