Labour MP calling for energy prices to be frozen

MP Gloria De Piero will join energy campaigners and Labour Party activists to launch a constituency wide petition calling on the Prime Minister to freeze energy prices.

The Labour Party has declared a national day of action this Saturday (9th November) with events planned up and down the country and the Ashfield MP will join campaigners at a special street stall in Eastwood at 10.45am before taking the campaign on the road to meet shoppers in Kirkby and Sutton town centre as well.

In Ashfield and Eastwood the average gas and electricity bill has gone up by £300 in just three years and during that same period prices have risen faster than wages in 39 out 40 months.

At the end of September, Ed Miliband announced Labour would freeze all energy bills until the start of 2017 in a bid to help hundreds of thousands of hard working families who are struggling to cope with the rising cost of living. This pledge would help over 43,000 households in the constituency and save the typical household £120 and an average business £1,800.

Speaking ahead of the national day of action Gloria said; “I know many people in Ashfield and Eastwood are struggling with the rising cost of living. Lots of residents have told me that they are worried about their energy bills and what really angers them is when the price of energy increases energy companies pass this on but when it drops they don’t see their bills fall. Well enough is enough. People who live here want to see action and our petition is calling on David Cameron to stand up to the big energy companies before the winter really begins to bite.”
