A KIRKBY teenager who has raised funds for a memorial garden at Ashfield School has received £50 towards the project.
Reece Lyle (17), of Grangewood Road, was one of seven other finalists to receive the cash at this year’s Young People of the Year award (YOPEY).
The finals were held on Thursday at Bestwood Lodge in Arnold which is the headquarters of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.
Earlier this month, we reported that Reece was up for an award in recognition of the fundraising he did following the death of his classmate Greg Bear (17), who died from scepticemia and bronchial pneumonia after becoming ill with flu earlier this year.
During this difficult time, Reece helped both staff and pupils and he organising a variety show to raise funds for the Greg Bear Memorial Garden, a peaceful place for Post-16 Centre students at Ashfield School.
The event was sponsored by Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue along with Nottinghamshire Police.
During the ceremony, Assistant Chief Fire Officer John Buckley said his service realised the value of investing in young people and encouraged them with various schemes.
And Chief Constable Julia Hodson described the finalists’ stories as inspirational and praised their drive, tenacity, determination and generosity of spirit.
The overall winners on the night were Lewis Tune, Aston Taylor and Fatou Touray from New College Nottingham.
