Kirkby rogue trader pleads guilty to fraud

A Kirkby cowboy trader has been caught for a scam targeting the elderly and vulnerable people pocketing thousands of pounds.

Christopher Russell of Rowan Drive, Kirkby, was one of a gang of six dwindling pensioners out of cash across the district.

The criminals, also from Tuxford and Bradford, made at least 97 homeowners believe they needed work on their homes.

Russell, along with his five fellow fraudsters pleaded guilty to fraud during the first week of a seven week trial.

The case has been led by East Midlands Scambusters Team, a regional investigation unit set up by the National Trading Standards Board which deals with large cases of fraud and deceptive trading practices.

The group used a variety of company names, including Tileshield, Tileshield Coatings, Weatherproof and Nationwide Roof Coatings Yorkshire Ltd.

The case has been adjourned until Tuesday 24th February for sentencing.

Lord Toby Harris, Chair of the National Trading Standards Board, said: “It is great news that this investigation and prosecution by the Scambusters team has resulted in those involved in this fraud being brought to justice.

“Cases like this demonstrate we will catch and prosecute criminals who deceive vulnerable people in this way.”
