Using different materials to make them, the pupils set rockets off using everything from chemical reactions to air.

The school spent the week celebrating Tim Peake’s launch into space.

Tim’s rocket launched on Tuesday of this week. It is the first time a British astronaut has been to space in over 20 years.

As well as making and launching rockets, the pupils also completed the ‘Tim Peake Spaceathlon challenge’ – tracking up as many km running and walking as Tim did travelling to the International Space Station, where he plans to spend six months.

The pupils had to reach 400km, and managed to reach 850km.

Science co-ordinator Su Martin said: “We set up two walking tracks in both playgrounds and the children were doing it during PE and in lunch time and play time during the week.

“We also added in the distance the rockets flew because the challenge was to achieve the distance running, walking or flying.

“I can’t believe we doubled it!,” she said.

“It’s absolutely fab. We were amazed. Blown away to be honest.”

During English lessons the children wrote Tim Peake autobiographies, news reports on the astronaut’s trip and some science poetry.
