Keeping pets and people united in Mansfield and Ashfield

Coun Elizabeth Mays, chairman of Ashfield District Council has chosen the Cinnamon Trust alongside the Royal British Legion as her charities for the coming year.

Coun Mays and husband Steven are volunteers with the charity and have been long term fosterers for pets for 20 years.

She said: “To help people keep pets with them as long as possible is a wonderful thing and is very rewarding.

“We have had up to eight dogs at one time - the last one was a Shih Tzu we looked after over Christmas.

“We had Yorkies, Zoe and Emma - one was blind and deaf, who stopped with us until they passed away.

“I am an animal lover and we have we have met some wonderful people and pets over the years.”

“The charity does a lot of work in the Ashfield area and it would be good to see more people come forward to volunteer.”

A spokesman for the charity told the Chad: “The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity for the terminally ill and people in their later years and their much loved, much needed companion animals.

“A large number of elderly or ill pet owners become very worried about their ability to care for their pets, and feel that their only option is to re-home them.

“This is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together.

She said the charity is appealing for volunteers to offer dog walks to a 12-year-old Lhasa Apso in the Mansfield area.

“Volunteers can offer any amount of free time, nobody who volunteers is out of pocket and we pay all vets fees.”
