Keep calm and carry on

THE beautiful surroundings of Newstead Abbey served as a wonderful backdrop to a performance of HMS Pinafore by outdoor theatre company Illyria on Friday evening, writes Catherine Allen.

That was until the heavy rain began to fall and audience members had to put up their umbrellas and don rain coats.

But the British weather did not faze these seasoned actors who carried on regardless.

This well-loved light opera by Gilbert and Sullivan is known for its sparkling word play and infectious tunes, both of which were delivered perfectly in this production.

In the year of the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics, the opera appeals to our sense of what it is to be British but there is also a tongue-in-cheek mockery of the upper classes and the humour still rings true today.

In the second half, the rain subsided and we sat back and enjoy this superb performance.
