Jia Ashton murder: suspect in dock

A 21-YEAR-OLD Heanor man has appeared in court charged with the murder of Jia Ashton.

David Simmonds was in the dock at Southern Derbyshire Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning after he was arrested on Thursday at his flat on Derby Road.

He was remanded in custody and told his next appearance will be at Nottingham Crown Court on 23rd May.

Graduate Mrs Ashton (25) was killed on 10th March as she walked from work at Thorntons’ headquarters to her nearby home in Somercotes.

He body was discovered in Sleetmoor Wood in the village three days later.

Her husband Matthew (26), who lived with his wife in Somercotes, is a teacher at Blidworth Oaks Primary School.

No application for bail was made during Saturday’s brief hearing.
